CHRONIC DISEASE MANAGEMENT
If you are suffering from a chronic disease like diabetes, cardiovascular disease or long-term thyroid disorders the treatment options offered by conventional medicine are not always satisfactory. Even when blood tests comes back “normal” there are a lot of people who don't feel good. I've seen patients who are always tired, find it hard to get up a flight of stairs, or who have numbness and tingling in their feet even though their blood sugars, thyroid hormone or blood pressure are well controlled. In situations like this we can make a tremendous difference in your quality of life by using both conventional medicine and naturopathic medicine together.
Naturopathic medicine can help you to improve the overall quality of your health and help you reduce the symptoms that are still lingering with your pharmaceutical treatments. Also, I can work with you and your primary care doctor or specialist to make sure the changes I suggest for you will not interfere in any way with the drugs you are taking. Also in many cases we see positive long-term change that can lead to a reduced need for pharmaceutical drugs.
Managing any kind of chronic disease always involves a combination of approaches. Generally I will suggest minor dietary or lifestyle changes, particular supplements that will increase your nutrition or that will help your body to function better, and sometimes more specific treatments like hormone balancing, sleep aids, or other symptomatic treatments. I always work to streamline treatments so that you are getting the maximum benefit from the smallest amount of supplements o r medications and I don't honestly think anyone in the world needs hand-fulls of pills.
Although diabetes and heart disease are great examples, they are not at all the only diseases that fall into this category. I see patients so often who are taking a sleep medication or using a CPAP but still wake up feeling unrested. People who are taking antidepressants who aren't depressed any more but just don't feel like themselves. Long-term skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis are another great example. Any situation in which your condition is long term and not fully controlled by medications; or where blood tests are within normal limits, but you just don't feel good. In these cases using natural medicine in addition to your regular treatments can improve your quality of life and help you to feel more like you.
